This tradition has a tendency to get superstitious as home sellers bury him x amount of feet away, upside down, etc. :) I did a little google search, and it turns out that this tradition started when people would basically twist a saint's arm for his or her intercession!
So people would bury St. Joseph and say, "St. Joseph, I will only dig you up when you get our house sold!" This made me laugh because I personally think you catch more bees with honey. ;)
The tradition is supposed to end with digging St. Joseph up and giving him in a place of honor in your new home. However, I decided to be one step ahead of the game and give him a place of honor from the get go!
I bought a beautiful 12" St. Joseph statue, and he has graced our bookshelf since June. We also started a novena on the first day we went on the market.
After a month on the market with no offers, Sew sent me a little plastic St. Joseph kit with strict instructions to "Bury Him!!!" I didn't have the heart to do it, and he is hiding in the bush at the moment. :)
In the end, St. Joseph has come through for us, and we have made it through all the negotiations with our buyer, and all we have left to do is close on September 19th!
We have also found a new home that we love, and the inspection went great there too! Thank you for all your prayers!
St. Joseph, pray for us! :)
It is so hard to be happy for you! I am sad to see you leave.
ReplyDeleteI will miss you!!!
FYI, I am going to come visit sometime...so be prepared for a home invasion!!
WOW!! congrats!! I felt the same way, I didn't want to bury him when we were going thru our house nightmares...So i stuck him in a Tupperware bowl and hide it way below in the kitchen cabinet. heheheheh- Anyways, my spiritual adviser (way conservation), hated that idea and told me it was not approved my the Catholic church!!
ReplyDeleteHooray!! That is great news. I used to work at a Catholic bookstore and would have to tell people all the time that it's very superstitious (and not very reverent) to stick poor St. Joe upside down in the ground.
ReplyDeleteIf the statue isn't blessed I say bury his a$$!!!!
ReplyDeleteLmbo!!!
