I owe Sew... (updated)

Hear ye, hear ye, Sew and anyone else who cares about my personal hygiene, let it be known that my armpits are now aluminum free.

Yep. It happened. I said that maybe it would happen in ten years, and that was a BIG maybe. And yet, today I took the plunge.

I made and wore homemade deodorant today, and after all my protesting...

I really liked it!

Coconut oil, corn starch, baking soda, and I added a drop of peppermint oil. It smells scrumptious, and I could eat it if I really wanted to!  Don't worry, I haven't gone that far over the edge...

I ran out of my deodorant on Tues., and yesterday morning I was scraping what I could out of the tube to get me through the day. By the evening, I was not smelling the best... as Sew says, I was a little spicy. ;)

So this morning, I made my deodorant and put some on after my shower. The temperature was in the 90's today, and at 11 pm, I still smell fresh and clean with a hint of peppermint. (Yes, I just did the sideways arm sniff... I don't think Bill noticed since football is on... haha I'm so attractive...)

It's official, ladies, I am CRUNCHY!

Yes, the granola variety...

Here is a link to the recipe and it even has a demo video! :)

  1. Sew is transforming us all! CRUNCHYYYYY! I love it. Good for you. I have always been allergic to deodorant so I have been ordering this sensitive skin, hypo allergy stuff from Avon since I started wearing deodorant (ok really, my mom orders about 10 at a time for me and I have never had to buy my own:) But, I think I may try this. Anyway I can get you to post your "recipe"
And Sew - you're KILLING ME! I mean I love you and all, but you've got us all changing what we put into and on our bodies. :)

  2. Holly, I will update the post with a link that even has a video demo. :)

Leila, the first coconut oil I ever bought was from the regular grocery store. It was about $6 for a good size tub, and it is refined coconut oil. I have since switched to the better kind to use in cooking etc, and that you can get from whole foods or on amazon. Nutiva is a good brand. This is what I used for my deodorant since it is what I had on hand, but the cheap grocery store stuff would probably work just fine for the deodorant. You just wouldn't get any coconut aroma from this kind. :)

  3. I'm all about the coconut butter. I told Sew I eat that sh*t all day! (Have you tried it? It's whole food, so better than just the oil! OH SO YUMMY!)

I would totally try that deodorant, my problem is laziness. If someone made it for me and mailed it to me, I'd wear it! :)

  7. Meg!!!!! BEST POST EVER!!! I knew the day would come, I knew it! I think you are more crunchy then me... ;)

Okay about the coconut oil....Tropical Traditions is the only CCO that still collects the oil using traditional methods. Fermenting it, allowing the oil to separate from the water...In the Phillipines where the oil is from, local small farmers still prepare this oil the traditional way by hand. So it is the best around.

Before I was buying TT, I was buying nutiva organic from amazon. But when TT runs specials $44 a gallon with free shipping it is cheaper and better then Nutiva....

Your best bet is to buy it online and not from the grocery. You get more for cheaper.

P.S. Is Leila wanting to know where CCO is to make deo?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

:) Just my two cents. :)

  8. As one who lives in a city that is rated in the "Top Five Sweatiest in America", I have yet to find a non-aluminum deodorant that works. It's just so yucky, humid, GROSSSSSSS here. I will have to try this... I really would like to switch from the "bad stuff" but don't want to smell like an onion (that was what the last natural deodorant did to me... it was weird).

  9. Leila - I bought the coconut oil online like Sew said. I've been using it on my face (more out of laziness because I did't want to buy moisturizer after I ran out), and noticed that my *horrid* *cystic* acne has gone away. That's nothing short of a miracle for me. I hope it's the coconut oil and this is a permanent fix.

  10. I haven't made my own deodorant, but I do use Tom's of Maine brand - no aluminum there :) and works well!
