Over the last two years under the leadership of Cardinal George, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has provided strong united leadership for American Catholics, and they have responded appropriately to issues and events including voting with a properly formed conscience, opposing the health care bill due to abortion funding, Obama's visit to Notre Dame etc.
However, the USCCB meets next week to elect its new president... and the expected choice is concerning to say the least. Current vice president, Bishop Gerald Kicanas has already had people worried due to his involvement in the ordination of a priest who ended up becoming a serial molester, and he has been hailed by liberal priest Fr. Reese as "the leading liberal hope" among the progressive left of the Church.
Red flags have been waving vigorously surrounding Bishop Kicanas and now there is a giant red stop sign.
The Rainbow Sash Movement has endorsed the Bishop as the choice for the next president. For those of you not familiar with this organization, its purpose is to promote a change in the Catholic teaching that homosexual acts are wrong. They seek to garner support and acceptance of gay marriage and the gay lifestyle within the Catholic Church. They express this view point by wearing rainbow sashes to Mass on Pentecost.
The Executive Director of the Rainbow Sash Movement said, "The impending election of Bishop Kicanas I believe is an attempt on the part of a majority of the Bishops to unravel a strangle hold that fundamentalism have on the US Conference of Catholic Bishops."
What he has called a strangle hold of fundamentalism, I call a beautiful return to orthodoxy by a growing number of faithful Catholics. The John Paul II generation is taking the Church by storm, and this is a very very good thing! We need our bishops to be a united front under leadership that is in line with the Vatican, and in the next two years leading up a the 2012 election, we need the president of the USCCB to be someone who will stand up for the teachings of the Church and the dignity of the human person!
So lets storm the gates of Heaven that the Holy Spirit will guide the bishops as they cast their vote! We can also help by contacting our own bishops! Ask them to please refrain from voting for Bishop Kicanas!
Pope John Paul II, pray for us!
I've been extremely worried about this for a few days now. I'm so glad you posted this, because I don't think people know about it! I'll be praying!
ReplyDeleteSt. Thomas More, pray for us!
Thanks for writing about this Megan! I think so few people are aware of what may happen. Here's a link to another blog where you can send in a letter of concern regarding Kicanas' election. http://bostoncatholicinsider.wordpress.com/
